Shaping solutions for a sustainable society
Various studies, including the European Commission’s foresight study on Critical raw materials for strategic technologies and sectors in the EU, confirm aluminium is one of the materials most needed for the green transition. That is because aluminium offers a vital solution to many of Europe’s sustainability challenges: it acts as a catalyst for low-carbon, resource-efficient technologies while supporting long-lasting growth and a more competitive EU economy.
Our Sustainability Roadmap Towards 2025, demonstrates how the European aluminium industry is committed to fostering change to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society. Complementing existing legislative requirements, the Roadmap outlines the industry’s sustainability objectives in the areas of production, applications, and society.
The Roadmap is complemented by our Vision 2050 for a low-carbon society by 2050 and the Circular Aluminium Action Plan, the sector’s strategy for achieving aluminium’s full potential for a circular economy by 2030.
Since the Roadmap’s launch in 2015, the European aluminium industry has made significant progress against the Roadmap’s objectives. In our 2020 mid-term review, we identified the next steps and tools to help accelerate the industry’s sustainability objectives and further increase our sustainability ambitions. Looking beyond 2025, we have stepped up our climate objectives and pledged our commitment to achieving climate neutrality before 2050.
