Alumina and primary aluminium production constitute the upstream part of our value chain. Aluminium production begins with bauxite, the “aluminium ore”. Alumina producers produce alumina (pure aluminium oxide) from bauxite via a process called refining. Primary aluminium producers extract molten aluminium from the alumina through an electrolytic process called smelting. After primary production, the cast ingots alloyed to specification are ready for further processing.

Aluminium ingots can be rolled into sheets from which aluminium foil and beverage cans are made, as well as parts of car bodies and a vast array of other products.

Using the forming process of extrusion, aluminium ingots can be shaped in virtually any form and delivers aluminium unlimited possibilities in production design for architecture, furniture or automotive structures, to name a few examples.

Once aluminium scrap has been collected and treated, the recovered aluminium can be recycled by being remelted or refined. Refiners produce casting alloys and remelters generate wrought alloys for sheets, strips, and extrusions. This results in new raw materials for a wide variety of applications. For example, refined aluminium can be found in cast engine blocks, while remelted aluminium will be used for products like car bodies or beverage cans. Aluminium can be recycled endlessly without the loss of its properties. Moreover, recycling aluminium takes up to 95% less energy to recycle it than producing primary aluminum, which also limits emissions, including greenhouse gases. Today, about 75% of all aluminum ever produced, is still in use. This makes it a key contributor to a more circular, resource-efficient economy.

The Innovation Hub is a proactive community of innovative companies from across Europe’s aluminium value chain and European Aluminum market groups. They collaborate together on research projects that advance a sustainable future and tackle technological challenges.

These members represent national aluminium or non-ferrous metal associations in individual European countries as well as the European aluminium surface treatment and foil sectors.

The Automotive & Transport Market Group brings together the big players in the aluminium automotive industry. The group consists of members active in extrusion, rolling, and primary aluminium.

The Building Market Group brings together the key actors in the field of windows, curtain walling, cladding, and roofing products. The group consists of fenestration system companies, and flat-rolled product suppliers involved in continuous coil coating, compositing and/or continuous anodising.

The Packaging Market Group gathers producers of can and foil stock active in the European packaging market by providing semi-finished products like aluminium can and foil sheet to their European customers. Its membership is also open to European associations representing specific groups of aluminium packaging producers.

Join us!

Are you ready to become part of our aluminium family? Joining European Aluminium is an easy and transparent process. Membership of European Aluminium is open to two different types of organisations located within European countries (EU, EFTA, UK, Turkey):

  1. Industrial firms: primary aluminium producers; downstream manufacturers; producers of recycled aluminium
  2. Associations representing the manufacturers of rolled and extruded products.

All applications are evaluated against specific criteria, such as adherence to our sustainability and fair-play principles, and economic activity. They are checked by our Director General, Executive Committee, and other colleagues.

Why should you join us? Watch the video to hear directly from our members! If you are interested in becoming a member of European Aluminium, or have any questions about joining our organisation, please contact Mélina Kotsaridis at kotsaridis@european-aluminium.eu.
