European Aluminium welcomes the Commission’s ETS Review proposal and the separate proposal to adjust free-allocation fallback benchmarks for 2026–2030 as important steps towards a more competitive pathway to industrial decarbonisation. However, further action is needed to address the high energy and carbon costs faced by European aluminium producers and the limited commercial availability of key decarbonisation technologies. This one-pager sets out six critical fixes to ensure the ETS supports investment and decarbonisation in Europe while effectively preventing carbon leakage.

European Aluminium and industry partners call on the EU to use the Circular Economy Act to build a functioning single market for secondary raw materials, with harmonised Extended Producer Responsibility rules, stronger transparency and better collection and recycling systems across Europe.

As the EU–India Free Trade Agreement moves to the Council of the European Union for signature and conclusion, and the EU–Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement proceeds through the European Parliament's approval, European Aluminium is concerned that the two agreements, in their current form, risk further weakening Europe’s strategic aluminium production and recycling base.
