European Aluminium welcomes the European Commission’s intention to extend the scope of CBAM to downstream products. However, even with the changes proposed, and despite CBAM’s stated objectives, the mechanism is expected to have a detrimental impact on the entire European aluminium value chain. To effectively close loopholes and prevent circumvention, this position paper outlines key fixes that must be urgently integrated into the draft Commission proposal by the co-legislators.
