European Aluminium welcomes the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) proposal and its objective to support strategic industries in returning to growth in Europe while advancing decarbonisation. We welcome the recognition of aluminium as a strategic sector; however, as an energy-intensive industry and a price taker in a highly competitive global market, the sector continues to face increasing pressure. As the legislative process advances, this paper sets out European Aluminium’s recommendations to ensure the IAA effectively delivers on its objectives.

This joint study by A|U|F and European Aluminium provides an overview of aluminium scrap flows from the German building sector and is now available in English. It analyses the evolution of building scrap generation, collection and recovery, highlighting the growing availability of post-consumer aluminium scrap and its importance for strengthening circularity and securing secondary raw materials.

European Aluminium regrets that yesterday’s vote in the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Review and Temporary Decarbonisation Fund failed to close key loopholes that could undermine the effectiveness of the EU’s carbon border levy for aluminium. The Committee adopted its position ahead of the September plenary vote but did not include the specific fixes needed for post-consumer scrap and the proposed 50-tonne mass-based threshold for imported CBAM goods.
