Joint Statement: CBAM Rules on Carbon Prices Paid in Third Countries Must Be Consistent with EU ETS Rules, Including on Carbon Credits

Following the publication of the European Commission’s draft Implementing Regulation on “Carbon Price Paid in Third Countries” under CBAM, the signatories stress that the mechanism’s rules must remain fully consistent with those applied under the EU Emissions Trading System. In particular, the statement raises concerns that the inclusion of domestic and international carbon credits could undermine the environmental integrity and effectiveness of CBAM. The signatories therefore call for a robust and coherent approach that ensures equal treatment of carbon pricing mechanisms and preserves a level playing field for European industry.
