This one-pager explains the role of electrification in decarbonising aluminium production across Europe. It outlines the key technology investments needed to move from pilots to industrial deployment, the main barriers to electrification, and the enabling conditions required to accelerate this shift in Europe.

European Aluminium and the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) jointly call on the European Parliament and the Council to ensure that European aluminium is eligible alongside steel under the material-credit mechanism proposed in the revision of Regulation (EU) 2019/631. The statement calls on the co-legislators to amend Article 5b so that both low-carbon steel and low-carbon aluminium are eligible under the proposed mechanism, ensuring a level playing field between materials.

European Aluminium welcomes the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) proposal and its objective to support strategic industries in returning to growth in Europe while advancing decarbonisation. We welcome the recognition of aluminium as a strategic sector; however, as an energy-intensive industry and a price taker in a highly competitive global market, the sector continues to face increasing pressure. As the legislative process advances, this paper sets out European Aluminium’s recommendations to ensure the IAA effectively delivers on its objectives.
