In a world of limited natural resources, recycling is vital.

As aluminium is a material with ‘permanent’ characteristics, it can be recycled infinitely without losing its properties, which secures its sustainable use. Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy needed for primary production so the potential for decarbonisation if we achieve full circularity is huge.

As our Vision 2050 shows, we are already delivering the European circular economy. We have recycling rates of 90% in transport and building and more than 60% in packaging. Provided adequate supportive policies are in place, the European aluminium demand in 2050 could be met by almost equal shares of primary and recycled aluminium. Closing the loop is a top priority for us, and we are striving towards 100% recycling across all segments.

Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, discusses why aluminium is a showcase example for the circular economy in a video recorded for the 15th International Aluminium Recycling Congress (26-27 February 2019 in Colmar, France). A full playlist of interviews and statements from the Congress can be found here.
